Training Series
2022-2023 Special Education Paraprofessional Training Series

Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM)
Many students with disabilities have difficulty with
standard materials, seeing them, manipulating them, or decoding or
comprehending them. These students need accessible instructional materials
(AIM) in order to access the general education curriculum. IDEA 2004 (300.172)
requires that textbooks and related core instructional materials be provided to
students with print disabilities in specialized formats in a timely manner. Participants
in this session will learn what AIM is and the eligibility requirements for a
student to access materials through AIM. Participants will also learn about
some sources available through accessible instructional materials and the roles
and responsibilities of those who support students who would qualify and
benefit from AIM. (1 hour)

Family Engagement
Students achieve great results when they are supported by
families and educators taking an active role in their education.
Paraprofessionals have a unique role in a student’s life as they provide many
opportunities to help students across the day. Participants will learn best
practices, the importance of family engagement to students’ success, and how to
do their part each day in the classroom. As with all interactions with
students, families, staff, and your community, please refer to your LEA’s
policies and procedures for guidance. We aim for you to learn new information,
clarify prior learning, and affirm previous conversations in this session. (1 hour)

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) Novice
A multi-tiered system of support or MTSS is a framework utilized to ensure all students receive access to the instruction and support that they need without delay. Paraprofessionals often times play a crucial role in sustaining this framework in our school settings. This session is intended to provide an overview or introduction to a multi-tiered system of support for a new or novice learner to the subject. (One Hour)
